India Shining!?

I have heard the following quote sometime from my father.
"Yatra nari pujyante tatra ramate devata"

pardon me if there are any grammatical mistakes, but the supposed meaning is that angels reside/dance in the place where women are worshiped. This is what is said. But what is happening?

The events are as follows. It started today when I called up my mom as usual. She told me that one of my cousins called her up today, and was crying since her father is not allowing her to go for EAMCET (Engineering entrance exam in A.P) training. In fact she got a free offer from the coaching as she got good marks in her 10th board exams and is a potential candidate. But her parents seem to be in a hurry to marry her off to some 'pujari' soon and wash their hands. My mother tried to convince her parents and I donno if they will listen to her or not and it is going to be a different story altogether.

A quick look around may tell us might have been a change in the way women are treated and in the ways they are leading their life in urban areas, it is still the same state as far as rural India is concerned. Probably its all there in the lack of awareness. I don't want to sound pessimistic here but it hurts when you see events like this. At this point all I can probably do is give a good effort in trying to convince her parents.
